Prof. Amro M. Farid gives keynote lecture on Energy-Water Nexus at EU-GCC Workshop

At the Laboratory for Intelligent Integrated Networks of Engineering Systems, we have been working on the Energy-Water Nexus in recognition that the supply and demand of water and energy are inherently coupled.  In the Middle East, this coupling is particularly aggravated by the hot & arid climate and regional water scarcity.   This subject has gained the attention of numerous policy centers.

Most recently, the EU-GCC Clean Energy Network has recognized the need to collaborate on the Energy-Water Nexus.  On November 26-27 2013, they held the EU-GCC Renewable Energy Policy Experts’ Workshop was held at Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi, UAE.  Prof. Amro M. Farid was invited to give a keynote presentation entitled:  “Opportunities for Operations Management & Planning of the Energy-Water Nexus”.  In this presentation, we first advocated the need for integrated energy-water markets based upon our recent publications on the subject.  We also noted the potential for integrated energy-water planning that can prioritize the water-intensity of energy technologies and the energy-intensity of water technologies.

LIINES wins Best Applied Research Paper Award at GCC CIGRE 2013

In a recent blog post, we shared that Prof. Amro M. Farid and Dr. Aramazd Muzhikyan authored and presented a paper entitled “The Need for Holistic Assessment Methods for the Future Electricity Grid” at this year’s GCC CIGRE conference held in Abu Dhabi.   This work has now received the Best Applied Research Paper Award!   Prof. Farid accepted the award on behalf of the LIINES from Eng. Salem Harithi (Network Service Director of Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority.) The associated monetary prize will be invested back into the laboratory’s research activities.

Prof. Amro M. Farid gives invited lecture at the Czech Technical University Department of Cybernetics

In recent months, we at the Laboratory for Intelligent Integrated Networks of Engineering Systems have been arguing for “Enterprise Control” in support of the future developments of the electricity grid.  This work has provoked particular interest from the Artificial Intelligence research community.   To that end, Prof. Amro M. Farid was invited on November 15th to give a lecture entitled “Intelligent Enterprise Control of Future Electric Power Systems” at the Czech Technical University Department of Cybernetics in Prague.  This presentation argues the need for holistic assessment methods and then highlights our recent work on the development of enterprise control strategies.  It draws from multiple LIINES publications lead by Dr. Aramazd Muzhikyan and Dr. Sergio Rivera.

Prof. Amro M. Farid presents Power Grid Enterprise Control paper at GCC CIGRE 2013

In recent months, we at the Laboratory for Intelligent Integrated Networks of Engineering Systems have been arguing for “Enterprise Control” in support of the future developments of the electricity grid.  In other words, the power grid’s primary, secondary and tertiary control must be addressed simultaneously to achieve both reliability as well as economic objectives.  These arguments have been presented in various forums.  The most recent of these is an extensive literature review entitled “The Need for Holistic Assessment Methods for the Future Electricity Grid” authored by Prof. Amro M. Farid and Dr. Aramazd Muzhikyan.   Prof. Farid presented this work at the 2013 GCC CIGRE conference held in Abu Dhabi on November 18-20.

Prof. Amro M. Farid presents paper on Optimal Power and Water Flow at IEEE IWIES 2013

In the middle east, water and electricity utilities are often combined within a single utility due to the presence of conventional desalination facilities that co-produce water and power.   This organizational and physical configuration opens opportunities for the co-optimization in the dispatch of power and water.  In the third of a three paper series, Prof. Amro M. Farid presents the paper entitled:  “Optimal Network Flow for the Supply Side of the Energy-Water Nexus“.  This work specifically addresses the network flow constraints that describe the geographical distribution of the two distribution systems.

The work will be presented at the IEEE International Workshop on Intelligent Energy Systems in Vienna, Austria November 14th 2013 which aims to bring researchers from academia, industry, standardization and public authorities together to discuss recent developments in architectures, concepts and algorithms for managing the increasing complexity in energy systems, especially in Smart Grids.  This year, the IEEE IWIES is collocated with IECON 2013 – The 39th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society.

Prof. Amro M. Farid presents Reconfigurable Manufacturing System Research at IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Conference in Manchester, UK

A Reconfigurable manufacturing system is a system that is designed at the outset for rapid change in structure, as well as in hardware and software components, in order to quickly adjust production capacity and functionality within a part family in response to sudden changes in market or regulatory requirements.  The challenge in the design of such systems is how to enable such reconfigurations and why.   One piece in the design puzzle is production path enumeration.  On Wednesday October 16th, Prof. Amro M. Farid presented his latest work on Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems at the IEEE Systems Man and Cybernetics Conference, Manchester UK.  This paper entitled:  “An Axiomatic Design Approach to Non-Assembled Production Path Enumeration in Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems”  combines Axiomatic Design for Large Flexible Systems with graph theory to present novel approaches to the design of reconfigurable manufacturing systems.

Prof. Sameh El-Khatib and Prof. Amro M. Farid promote the IEEE CSS Vision for Smart Grid Controls

On September 24th, Prof. Sameh El-Khatib and Prof. Amro M. Farid delivered a presentation entitled:  “Smart Grid:  The Path Going Forward” at the 3rd Annual Smart Grid and Smart Meters conference in Abu Dhabi organized by Fleming Gulf.  This presentation was based upon the recently published IEEE CSS Vision for Smart Grid Controls: 2030 and Beyond document in which Prof. Farid is also an author.  The presentation will be posted on the Fleming Gulf website shortly and the first chapter of the IEEE CSS Vision document is freely available.

The 3rd Annual Smart Grid and Smart Meters Conference is an industrially facing meeting allowing for leaders in the power industry to speak about emerging trends.

How Unsynchronized Metronomes are the like the power grid.

If you ever wondered how the power grid works with all of its oscillations and attempts to synchronize power generation and power demand over such a wide area, consider this:

32 Metronomes synchronize together on their own over the span of 5 minutes.  Truly remarkable.

In much the same way, synchronous generators and motors all over the power grid can eventually find synchronicity — that is if you wait long enough without disturbing them.  But then if you can’t wait that long then…well…smart grid of course.

IEEE Spectrum Features LIINES Research on Power Grid Enterprise Control Systems

Following the recent publication of the 2013 September Edition of the IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter where Prof. Amro M. Farid advocates the concept of power grid enterprise control, the IEEE Spectrum Magazine has also promoted the concept amongst its readership.  There, Bill Sweet discusses Power Grid Enterprise Control in the context of “Completely Self-Controlled Power Systems“.
